2013-12-11 Ahmed Zewail was a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who developed a rapid laser technique that allows scientists to study atoms during chemical reactions. An influential voice in science, Ahmed participated in the US President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology , a group of leading scientists and engineers who provide recommendations on science, technology, and innovation policy.

Zewail Ahmed Hassan was an Egyptian chemist, known as the "father of femtochemistry". He was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on  Professor Ahmed H. Zewail has pioneered the development of femtosecond chemistry in molecular beams. With ultrafast lasers and molecular beam technology, Zewail´s landmark research is uncovering the real-time dynamics of chemical reactions at their most fundamental level. Interview with Professor Ahmed H. Zewail by Professor Sture Forsén, Lund University, and David Dishart, student, 12 December 1999. Professor Zewail talks about how he started in the field of femtosecond spectroscopy; the future of chemistry (3:51); his current work (5:43); his thoughts concerning femtosecond methods for studies in the living cell (7:15); encouraging students in Egypt to study Ahmed H. Zewail was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 "for his studies of the transition states of chemical reactions using femtosecond spectroscopy." Zewail was a major influence in the field of Chemical Physics; he mentored many students at the California Insitute of Technology and was recognized for his contributions by many organizations and institutions around the world. Ahmed Zewail will forever be remembered for three main reasons: first, he was the individual who first demonstrated that the structure and dynamics of atoms in the transition state of chemical reactions could be determined through the judicious use of ultrafast lasers, in a field that he pioneered, for which he coined, called femtochemistry; second, he transformed both gas phase electron Ahmed Zewail held his Nobel Lecture December 8, 1999, at Aula Magna, Stockholm University.
